CCNB and Vitalité Health Network Join Forces to Offer Micro-certification in Phlebotomy

Campbellton, May 5, 2021 – CCNB, in partnership with Vitalité Health Network, will offer a new micro-certification in phlebotomy (drawing blood) program starting May 31; the goal is to overcome the shortage of human resources in phlebotomy.

This eight-week training program, which includes a placement, will be offered online for free through a partnership between Vitalité Health Network and WorkingNB.

“Students who register in the program will be able to acquire the competencies necessary for drawing blood samples. This is a stackable micro-certification, which means that this training is transferable and may be used as a pathway to other CCNB programs related to the health field, including the medical laboratory assistance and medical laboratory sciences programs,” explained Julie Cyr, Dean of the École de la santé et des services communautaires and Director of the Campbellton campus.

“Individuals with a high school diploma, adult high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED) may apply,” she added.

“This type of innovative idea is essential to the sustainability of our services and of the health care system in general. The project was highly applauded by our team and quickly set in motion. We are aware of the recruiting challenges in phlebotomy and we know how important offering this type of training is for filling our many vacant positions, some 15 province-wide. This program not only provides free education, but also the opportunity to study and work here in New Brunswick,” said Yves Goudreau, Director of Laboratory Services at Vitalité Health Network.

“During the first six weeks, students will complete a combination of theory training in the classroom and in the lab in their respective region. During the last two weeks, they will complete a placement in one of the Network’s health centres,” mentioned Mr. Goudreau.

“Meeting the needs of New Brunswick’s labour market is critical to our economy, and the primary objective of WorkingNB” added Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Trevor Holder. “WorkingNB provides programs that are customized, flexible and responsive to specific needs and micro-credentialing is just one way we can quickly address significant gaps in the workforce. We are pleased to partner with CCNB and Vitalite Health Network to deliver this program that will support essential health services.”
