Obstetrical services at Chaleur Regional Hospital remain closed

Bathurst, Friday, January 4, 2019 – Vitalité Health Network wishes to inform the public in the Chaleur and Acadian Peninsula regions that obstetrical (childbirth) services at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst will not reopen on Monday, January 7, as planned.

“Despite all the efforts of the management of Mother-Child Services, we will be unable to re-establish childbirth services in Bathurst on January 7,” stated Gilles Lanteigne, President and CEO of the Network.  “This is a regrettable situation that is unfortunately beyond our control. A number of unforeseen circumstances have impeded our plan, including delays experienced in the training of nurses as well as extended leave among the nursing staff of the Obstetrical Unit of Chaleur Regional Hospital,” Mr. Lanteigne explained.

The Network is now working to re-establish the service on February 4, 2019. During the closure, pregnant women will be referred to Campbellton Regional Hospital or Miramichi Regional Hospital for their deliveries.  Pregnant women with questions can call 544-2310 for more information on how to proceed during the temporary closure.

“I thank all our employees for their tireless efforts to resolve this issue, and I would like to take this opportunity to express our regrets to the public for any inconvenience resulting from this temporary closure,” Mr. Lanteigne concluded.
