New digital radiography and urology units installed at the Edmundston Regional Hospital

Edmundston, June 2, 2014 – Vitalité Health Network has announced that the Edmundston Regional Hospital is now equipped with two new digital general radiography units and one new digital urology unit.

“I am pleased that our government is able to make these important investments in the Edmundston Regional Hospital as part of our plan to rebuild New Brunswick’s health-care system,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé, who attended the inauguration on behalf of Health Minister Hugh Flemming. “By upgrading our aging technology, we ensure that our system remains efficient, effective and sustainable for future generations.”

General radiography remains key to obtaining certain diagnoses through medical imaging. The new general radiography units now offer more sophisticated digital images.  According to Dr. Akm Ziaul Haq Choudhuri, Head of the Medical Imaging Department, the new units are easier to use and allow examinations to be performed more effectively and efficiently.  “Thanks to this new technology, the units also reduce the radiation dose that patients receive while at the same time optimizing image quality,” he stated.

The Surgical Suite at the Edmundston Regional Hospital is also now equipped with a digital urology unit that uses a high-resolution x-ray detector to produce images of the entire urinary system with a single exposure. In addition to speeding up image capture and reducing the radiation dose, the unit’s design gives medical staff better access to the patients.

Pierre Verret, Chief Operating Officer of the Northwest Zone of Vitalité Health Network, is very pleased that the Edmundston Regional Hospital is now equipped with these new cutting-edge units. “Thanks to these new modern units meeting today’s standards, our medical staff and health professionals will be able to continue excelling in the services they provide to the region’s patients,” he explained.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the Edmundston Regional Hospital with a number of dignitaries and guests in attendance. The purchase and installation of these three new units represents an investment of $1.5 million in improving the health care available in the Northwest Region.
