Kidney Dialysis

The Kidney Dialysis Department provides:

  • the care and treatment needed by patients suffering from chronic kidney failure or from a disease that may cause kidney failure;
  • programs to monitor and prevent complications in kidney patients;
  • hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments;
  • an education program for in-home treatment.

The Kidney Dialysis Department has existed at the Hôtel-Dieu in Edmundston since 1968. It was officially recognized in January 1973 by the New Brunswick Department of Health. In 1973 a first patient from the Edmundston region had the chance to have a kidney transplant in Montréal. In 1974, the first patient returned home with a hemodialysis machine after receiving education. Peritoneal dialysis has been offered in Edmundston since 1977, allowing patients to remain at home for treatment.

The department is located on the first floor of the Edmundston Regional Hospital.
