Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

General Info

This exercise and education program is for people with heart disease. It helps people recover and get their strength back and reduces their risk of a relapse.
The program:

  • Improves physical fitness and the ability to do everyday tasks;
  • Improves quality of life and self-confidence;
  • Reduces the risk of a relapse by reducing risk factors;
  • Improves knowledge of risk factors;
  • Prepares people to go back to work.

The program is free. It lasts 12 weeks. It can be adjusted to a patient’s medical condition, needs, and tastes. It includes:

  • Consultation and follow-up services;
  • Assessment of cardiovascular health at the beginning and end of the program;
  • Advice on diet;
  • Advice on cholesterol control, high blood pressure, weight, diabetes, and quitting smoking;
  • A personalized exercise program that is effective, safe, and tailored to a patient’s health, age, and fitness level;
  • Exercise sessions supervised by professionals or a personalized home exercise program;
  • Information on depression and coping with other problems related to heart disease.

In Moncton, in addition to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, the Cardiac Wellness Program offers:

  • A maintenance program for people who wish to pursue their rehabilitation:
    • Consultations with the physician, nurse, dietitian, kinesiologist, and psychologist as needed;
    • Weight training program and access to the fitness room;
    • Unlimited number of exercise sessions;
    • Continuing education;
    • Walking club;
    • Fees of $50 per month or $480 per year.
  • A prevention program for people who have never had heart disease but who have one or more risk factors. It is offered free of charge to patients who are diabetic or who have three of the following risk factors:
    • Obesity;
    • High blood pressure;
    • Dyslipidemia;
    • Depression/stress;
    • Glucose intolerance;
    • Family history of heart problems;
    • Smoking;
    • Kidney failure.

Fees apply to people with fewer than three risk factors – $50 per month or $480 per year.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours are the same in all the Network's hospitals.

General visiting hours

2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Two visitors at a time
  • Children under 12 years of age (special authorization) accompanied by an adult
  • General visiting hours do not apply to the Restigouche Hospital Centre

Special hours by unit/department

Intensive Care - Concentrated Care

  • 10 minutes per hour
  • Family members and significant others only

Obstetrics

  • Spouse and children: 24/7
  • Other visitors: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m

Palliative Care

  • Immediate family or significant others: 24/7
  • Other visitors: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Pediatrics

  • Parents or subsitute: 24/7
  • Other visitors: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m

Psychiatry

  • Weekdays: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Weekends and holidays: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Restigouche Hospital Centre

  • Family members and significant others:
  • Flexible hours according to the patient’s treatment plan
  • Forensic Unit:  Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Arrangements must be made with the Nurse Manager or delegate for each unit at all times
